YORKSHIRE'S EAST COAST
10th – 11th October 2009
Autumn migration.
A two day break visiting some of Yorkshire's most exciting birding hotspots, where we'll search for visible signs of migration. At this time of year the Yorkshire coast is as good as any for witnessing large movements of birds heading south, with regular falls of commoner species, frequently involving thousands of birds. Pipits, thrushes, chats, warblers, flycatchers and bunting are all represented and often rarer species can occur with their common cousins.
A full day will be spent in the Spurn area, one of the best-known rarity hotspots in the UK. Here almost anything could turn up and scarce passerines such as Yellow-browed, Pallas & Barred Warblers, Ring Ouzel, Red-backed Shrike, Red-breasted Flycatcher and Lapland Bunting are recorded annually. Other possibilities may include Firecrest, Radde's Warbler, Bluethroat, Richards Pipit, Little Bunting, Common Rosefinch and Wryneck. On the Humber Estuary there should be a good selection of common waders, which often attracts hunting Peregrine. Rare waders can also be attracted, with Pectoral, White-rumped and Buff-breasted Sandpipers all featuring in recent years.
The second day will be spent further north along the coast, visiting several sites of interest, depending on where the birds are. Flamborough Head & Filey Brigg are both likely to feature, having earned a strong reputation for scarce and rare birds. In addition to any migrants recorded, there's a good chance of something of interest being recorded at see, with Great, Arctic & Pomerine Skua's, Puffin, Guillemot, Common Scoter, Gannet and Red-throated Diver all possible. Purple Sandpiper, a winter visitor to the area will also be looked for. Should a Mega Rarity be located nearby, all efforts will be made to see it. Recent Mega's have included Brown & Taiga Flycatcher, White's Thrush, Pine Grosbeak, and Red-flanked Bluetail.
