FLORIDA: Winter in the sunshine state
On this late winter escape to the sunshine state we will search for the key Florida specialities found nowhere else in the US, these include Snail Kite, Short-tailed Hawk, Limpkin, Caribbean Flamingo, White-crowned Pigeon, Florida Scrub-jay and Spot-breasted Oriole. While other much sought after birds include Roseate Spoonbill, White Ibis, Reddish Egret, Tricoloured Heron, Wood Stork, Anhinga, American White and Brown Pelicans, Magnificent Frigatebird, American Purple Gallinule, Mottled Duck, Crested Caracara, Swallow-tailed Kite, Barred and Burrowing Owls, Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Brown-headed Nuthatch, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher and Painted Bunting. With its sunny subtropical climate, Florida is a winter home to millions of birds seeking to escape harsh winters elsewhere in North America. We will visit several wetlands including the famous Everglades, where a series of easy trails and boardwalks lead us amongst the marshes teeming with herons, egrets, ducks and coots, while overhead the mighty Bald Eagle Soar. On the coast, sandy beaches and tidal flats are a wash with waders, gulls and terns. Its also home to a good selection of passerines, which over the years have included many rarities such as Western Spindalis and Bananaquit. As well as birds we should also see West Indian Manatee, Armadillos, Alligators and the rare American Crocodile. Florida really is bursting with great wildlife and often wildlife that's not only abundant but also incredibly tame... don't forget your camera!

FINLAND: Northern Owls & Eastern Specialities
There are still crystal-clear lakes and stretches of almost untouched wilderness in many parts of Finland, where you walk through the old forests and enjoy the clean air, and in doing so enjoy some of the most sought after birds in Europe. This is a two centre tour, spending the first half in Oulu where we search for Owls. Here Great Grey, Ural, Eagle, Tengmalm's and Pygmy Owls all breed and with the help of expert local guides we have an excellent chance of seeing them all. The much
sought
after Hawk Owl is also present most years and if there are any in the vicinity our guides will know exactly where to find them. Oulu is also one of the last places in Finland where the rare Terek Sandpiper still breeds along with other rare breeders such as Pallid Harrier and Citrine Wagtail. Other possibilities in this fascinating area include White-tailed Eagle, Smew, Common Crane, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Capercaillie and both Black and Three-toed Woodpeckers, while the surrounding meadows and fields hold lekking Ruff. Moving east to the Siberian taiga forest in the Kuusamo region our attention shifts to searching out those eastern specialities on the very edge of there range. These include such gems as Siberian Tit, Siberian Jay, Pine Grosebeak and the beautiful Red-flanked Bluetail. Here the supporting cast includes Little and Rustic Buntings, Common Rosefinch, Arctic Warbler, Black and Hazel Grouse,
Red-necked Phalarope
and Red-necked Grebe all of which will be in their dazzling breeding plumage.
