WALES IN SUMMER
19th – 21st June 2009
This is a three-day break, combining the best of the central areas (Kite country) with the north coast, Snowdonia and Anglesey.
Day 1
Set off from the midlands early heading for Central Wales, once there these beautiful wooded valleys should start to provide us with our first target bird the handsome Red Kite. This area is also home to a very healthy population of Common Buzzard and Raven, while Peregrine should be seen over the rockier wilder parts. After lunch we'll visit Gigrin Farm feeding station, where we'll be treated to excellent views of Red Kites. Although numbers at this time of year are typically not as high as in winter, birds often show better as there's less competition for food.
As well as the raptors we'll also look for Dipper, Grey Wagtail and Kingfisher on the many rivers, and Wood Warbler, Pied Flycatcher
and Redstart in the Woodlands.
Day 2
After breakfast we'll move to Anglesey where we'll spend the full day. We'll visit South Stack RSPB with its wonderful seabird colony, where Guillemot, Razorbill, Puffin and Shag are all present. Raven, Peregrine and Stonechat should also be seen along the cliff tops, as should another much sought after bird, Red-billed Chough.
We'll visit a nearby tern colony where Sandwich, Common and Arctic Tern breed and Roseate Tern can occasionally be found. We'll also look for Black Guillemot a rare breeder on the southern limits of its range.
Day 3
We'll head east along the coast making a number of stops along the way, visiting several different habitats from coastal marshes, deciduous woodland and mountain valleys. Here we'll have further chances of target birds such as Little Egret, Peregrine, Wood Warbler, Pied Flycatcher, Redstart and Red-billed Chough.
After a full days birding we'll make a start on our drive back to the midlands, stopping off on route for a meal.
