SUFFOLK IN SPRING
28th – 29th May 2009

On this short break we'll visit two of Suffolk's, and indeed England's finest reserves, Lakenheath & Minsmere, where we'll look for some of Britain's rarest breeding birds including Bittern, Common Crane, Avocet, Stone Curlew, Dartford Warbler and Golden Oriole.

Day 1
After an early start we'll arrive at Lakenheath RSPB, home to the UK stronghold of Golden Oriole. Although this species is notoriously difficult to observe, we should be able to hear the fluty song from within the extensive popular plantations, and with some patience see this exotic Mediterranean species. In contrast to the elusive orioles, Hobby will be very obvious, with up to 40 birds regularly attracted here at this time, often giving breathtaking views as they hunt over the reeds in search of dragonflies. Bearded Tit also breed here, as do Marsh Harrier and Bittern.  After lunch we'll have a quick look for Stone Curlew at one of the regular breeding sites nearby, before moving to the coast where we'll check into our hotel. Here we can freshen up before our evening meal, after which we'll head out onto a nearby heath for Nightingale, Nightjar and Woodcock.

Day 2
Today we'll spend the whole day at Minsmere RSPB. This is a large reserve with a variety of habitats, which in turn holds a large selection of breeding birds, regularly supplemented by large numbers of passage species. In the Reedbeds we'll look for Bittern, Marsh Harrier, Cetti's Warbler and Bearded Tit, while in the woodlands we hope to find Firecrest, Nightingale, Garden Warbler and Turtle Dove. However Minsmere is perhaps best known for its wader scrape, where a healthy population of Avocet breed. At this time of year it also attracts a great variety of passage waders with sought after birds such Spotted Redshank & Ruff, both in brilliant breeding plumage and the scarce Temminck's Stint all possible. Other scarce passage birds such as Spoonbill, Black Tern and Little Gull are also regularly encountered, as are Little Egret, Mediterranean Gull and Garganey.

After a full day in the field we'll make a start on the journey back to the midlands, stopping on the way for an evening meal.

The timing of this trip is aimed to coincide with spring migration; this makes it a very exciting time of year with many passage migrants such as warblers, chats and flycatchers on the move. Rarities are frequently observed and gems such as Bluethroat, Red-backed Shrike, Icterine Warbler and Hoopoe are all regular.

Staying midweek ensures that we can enjoy these beautiful birds and the beautiful coastal scenery without the crowds and busy hides often associated with Minsmere.
